If you were ever thinking about taking a road trip through Texas, stop thinking and just go for it. We had the best the time!! Not the finest accommodations. So if you’re looking for luxury, look elsewhere. This trip is about improv and seeing where the road takes you. You must be able to walk into a dive bar and order a Lone Star ( Texas brewed beer ) and feel comfortable perhaps talking to someone about a hard day on the Ranch. All joking aside.
We didn’t plan anything in advance. We stopped when we wanted. If we wanted to stay the night in that town, we figured it out on the spot. I highly recommend this if you’re up for a little adventure in which case, I was born ready.
We flew into El Paso and we flew out of Austin. That’s the only thing we had planned. If you never been to El Paso there’s not much there except amazing Mexican food and some really good western wear stores. If you like boots, hats, and belts with tons of metal detailing on them. Definitely, stop!
From El Paso, we drove to Marfa, Texas. We knew we wanted to go through Marfa for a number of reasons. If you haven’t been to Marfa, this is a must stop on your road trip. Tons of art installations, cool people, and a really picturesque town. Everywhere you look is another picture to be taken. The best way to describe it is like an old western movie set.
While in Marfa there are three hotels, I recommend the Thunderbird, El Cosmico or Paisano. The photos taken below were taken at El Cosmico. El Cosmico is best described as a campground. They have teepees and old airstream trailers turned into “hotel” rooms. El Cosmico and the Thunderbird are also great places to hang with other travelers or locals. The pool at the Thunderbird gets a little wild at night as a lot of locals break into to use it. While in Marfa, we met some amazing people. Alan, the guy who took the photos and Alec his friend who’s gave us the scoop on Marfa. Something to know is that there are only three restaurants in Marfa. So if you want to eat dinner be sure to make a reservation or you’ll be eating pringles from the gas station, that’s what the locals told us.
From Marfa, we drove to Alpine. Alpine is much bigger then Marfa. More restaurants and bars, I think our exact words were “Wow, this is like a big city.” I think it had three stop lights. When you’ve been driving out in the middle of nowhere for so long three stoplights starts to seem big time. The town is really cute and a bit more commercialized, so getting a designer cup of coffee is possible along with a green juice fix. From Alpine, we drove to Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is a “real” town (bigger yet) and a German one at that, think Bavarian village. It was a little too developed for my taste. I was trying to stay off the beaten path so we just passed through, but this is a good stop for a quick look and a beverage break. We ended up staying in Kerrville a bit smaller with some good hole in the wall bars.
The next day we drive through Hill Country near Wimberley. I highly recommend this. It’s very beautiful with rolling hills, hence the name Hill Country. There’s a river that runs around the town called Blanco, People jump and in and swim. Make sure to check out Blue Hole regional park and Jacobs’s Well. Jacob’s Well is a really fun swimming hole, maybe a bit scary to jump but you can do it!
Our last stop was Austin. Austin is a great spot for live music. We ended up spending most of our time at a speakeasy inside of a hostile. I can’t remember the name of it, but there is only one hostel in downtown Austin, so you should be able to find it. When you walk in the reception is really small and there’s a bookcase directly in front of you that slides open. This is the spot in Austin. Austin was a nice transition back to the reality. You can stay in a luxe hotel and with white robes and get your bearings back. I recommend popping a bottle of champagne and congratulating yourself for making it all the way across Texas hopefully in one piece and a returnable rental car. Places and links below. If you have questions, don’t be shy and shoot me an email. Xx Nik

Places and links. A lot of the places we went don’t have websites and I highly recommend using yelp to just find random places to discover. That’s half the fun, but if you’re a planner this is a pretty solid list to start with.
